Density Measurement Using Hydrometers

Hydrometers are used to measure the density of liquids, from light to heavy fluids, including petroleum products, using the floating principle. The working procedure is as follows: a sufficient volume of the liquid sample is poured into a graduated cylinder or another suitable container and brought to the desired temperature. The appropriate hydrometer is then placed into the liquid. Depending on the density of the fluid, the hydrometer floats to a specific level, and the reading on the hydrometer indicates the density of the liquid

If the hydrometer sinks completely or fails to float, it indicates that the selected hydrometer’s measurement range is inappropriate and should be replaced with a suitable one
