Description

Thin Film Oven Test (TFOT) for Bitumen

The thin film oven test (TFOT) is used to evaluate the effect of heat and air on bitumen by measuring the physical properties of the sample before and after the test, as well as the mass change of the bitumen

In this method, 50 g of the selected bitumen sample (measured using a balance with 0.001 g accuracy) is poured into special stainless-steel trays known as TFOT pans (Laucks). After placement and thermal equilibrium with the ambient environment, the samples are placed in the TFOT oven at a temperature of 163°C for 5 hours. According to ASTM D1754, EN 12607-2, AASHTO T47, the temperature accuracy of this device must be ±1°C

After completion of the test, the samples are removed from the oven and various parameters are measured and reported, including bitumen mass loss, viscosity (measured using U-tubes) at 60°C and 135°C, penetration, and ductility

Introduction to the TFOT Bitumen Oven

The TFOT bitumen oven is one of the key laboratory instruments for evaluating the effects of heat and air on bituminous samples. This device enables laboratories to examine changes in bitumen mass loss, viscosity, penetration grade, and ductility after exposure to standardized thermal conditions.

One of the most important features distinguishing the TFOT oven from conventional ovens includes the following

  • The internal dimensions of the oven must comply with those specified in the standard (minimum 330 mm and maximum 535 mm)

  • The oven walls must be thermally insulated

  • The oven door must be equipped with a double-glazed insulated glass window, with minimum dimensions of 100 × 100 mm, to allow reading of the ASTM 13C thermometer during the test

  • The device must be equipped with a horizontal rotating metal plate capable of holding four TFOT sample pans, allowing samples to be tested without vibration or displacement. The rotation speed of the plate must be 5.5 revolutions per minute, with smooth and uniform motion, as required by the standard

  • The TFOT oven must be capable of reaching temperatures up to 180°C and maintaining 163°C with ±1°C accuracy throughout the test duration

Applications of the TFOT Bitumen Oven

  • Measurement of mass loss of bitumen and bituminous materials under the effect of heat and air

  • Evaluation of changes in viscosity, ductility, and physical properties of bitumen after heating

  • Research and development testing in bitumen, asphalt, and polymer industries

  • Quality control of bituminous products prior to industrial production

  • Assessment of the effects of environmental and thermal conditions on bituminous samples

Features and Advantages of the TFOT Bitumen Oven Supplied by LabLand

Although most imported TFOT ovens show acceptable compliance with standards, their high cost led LabLand to provide a domestically manufactured model with reliable compliance at a significantly more affordable price

The TFOT oven supplied by the LabLand team offers the following features

  • Durable insulated metal housing with electrostatic powder coating

  • Fully stainless-steel internal chamber with standard dimensions

  • Ability to generate and maintain 163°C with ±1°C accuracy

  • Equipped with a digital display with calibration and offset capability

  • Rotating plate driven by a motor with standard-compliant rotation speed

  • Supplied with four sample pans (TFOT trays)

The advantages of these features include stable performance, accurate results, high safety, and ease of operation for laboratory personnel

Operating Principle of the TFOT Device

In the Thin Film Oven Test (TFOT), the bitumen samples are placed on the rotating plate and exposed to heat and air at 163°C for 5 hours. After completion of the test, the following changes are evaluated

  • Mass loss of the sample

  • Changes in viscosity and ductility

  • Changes in penetration grade and physical properties

This process helps quality control specialists and laboratory engineers predict the behavior of bitumen under real production and service conditions

Laboratory and Industrial Applications

The TFOT bitumen oven is used in research and development centers, quality control laboratories, and asphalt and bitumen production companies. This device enables evaluation of the effects of heat and air on the chemical and physical properties of bitumen, contributing to the production of high-quality materials in compliance with international standards

Conclusion

The TFOT bitumen oven is suitable for all research and development centers, quality control laboratories, and bitumen and asphalt production companies. It provides the capability to assess the effects of heat and air on the chemical and physical properties of bitumen, supporting the production of materials that meet global quality standards

The fully Iranian-manufactured TFOT device supplied by the LabLand team is an advanced laboratory instrument offering high accuracy, complete safety, and stable performance. With full compliance with ASTM and national standards, this device is an ideal solution for evaluating changes in bituminous materials under the influence of heat and air, delivering reliable and standardized results
