Description
Asphalt Extraction Filter
The asphalt extraction filter is used to determine the percentage of bitumen in asphalt samples within the Asphalt Binder Extraction Method. Determining the bitumen content of asphalt mixtures is of great importance for contractual matters between employers and contractors, as well as for evaluating the quality of placed asphalt and other critical considerations. Therefore, using a suitable laboratory asphalt extraction filter with uniform properties is essential as one of the key tools in the asphalt extraction test
Considering all the above factors and the details specified in ASTM D2172, LabLand introduces the IB450 asphalt extraction filter, manufactured by CHM (Spain), to its valued customers
Introduction of IB450 Asphalt Extraction Filter – CHM (Spain)
The extraction filters are supplied in original manufacturer packs of 100 pieces, each filter sheet weighing 20 g, with an outer diameter of 247 mm and an inner diameter of 45 mm, and provided with a specific Catalog Number and Batch Number. Uniform quality and physical properties of each filter sheet, along with competitive pricing, are among the key features of this asphalt extraction filter. High precision in design and manufacturing, as well as full compliance with national and international standards, ensure reliable performance in asphalt laboratories
This filter is suitable for extraction devices with a capacity of 1500 g
Features of the Asphalt Extraction Filter
Precise and uniform weight of each extraction filter with 0.1 g accuracy
Supplied in packs of 100 pieces
Inner diameter: 45 mm
Outer diameter: 247 mm
Compliant with ASTM D2172, AASHTO T164A, EN 12697-1, and ISIRI 1689
Applications of the Asphalt Extraction Filter
Asphalt produced in asphalt plants is manufactured from a mixture of specific percentages of aggregates, bitumen, and filler, which is referred to as the asphalt mix design. In road construction processes, the amount of bitumen used is one of the most important parameters in determining asphalt quality as well as financial and contractual considerations between employers and contractors. Therefore, determining the bitumen content of asphalt mixtures is a critical test for both parties
In this test, a specified amount of hot asphalt prior to execution is sampled by an accredited laboratory and transferred to the laboratory using an asphalt flask. 1500 g or 3000 g (depending on the type and capacity of the laboratory extraction device) of the sample is placed into the extraction bowl. A single extraction filter sheet is placed over the bowl, and the device lid is closed
Then, using solvents specified in the standard , and operating the extraction device at a speed of 3000 rpm, the asphalt sample is washed of bitumen by centrifugal force. The solvent containing the dissolved bitumen is discharged from the device outlet into an external container. The results of this process include wet washed aggregates, bitumen dissolved in solvent, and filler collected on the extraction filter
By drying the aggregates in designated laboratory ovens and weighing them, the percentage of aggregates in the asphalt sample is calculated. By removing the solvent using a furnace or oven, the percentage by weight of bitumen is determined. Additionally, by drying the extraction filter and considering its initial weight, the percentage by weight of filler used in the asphalt is calculated. The overall test results are then reported to the employer or contractor in a formal report
Due to the frequent performance of this test, the availability of high-quality extraction filters with uniform weight and physical properties at a reasonable price is one of the main concerns of municipal quality control laboratories, private laboratories, and asphalt producers and plants. At LabLand, in cooperation with CHM Spain, this requirement has been made easily accessible
